Things To Do In Amsterdam

Visit Rijksmuseum and see Rembrandt’s famous “Night Watch”.  The name is actually a nickname the piece has been given because as layers of varnish were added to the painting it became darker and darker and thus nicknamed “Night Watch” ~ it looks like the people in the painting are all standing in the dark.

Visit Jodenbreestraat to see Rembrandt’s house where he lived from 1639-1658.  See the room where he created most of his works of art.

Also, don’t miss seeing Anne Frank’s House.  This is where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary…which is on display.

The Jordaan district is a more bohemian part of the city with lovely sidewalk café’s.

The Van Gogh museum houses well over 200 paintings from Van Gogh.

Getting around Amsterdam – it’s a very small city, very walkable.  Rent a bike and peddle your way around or use public transportation…renting cars is quite expensive.

Try taking a glass-topped boat canal cruise to see the city from the river.  What a great way to get an overview of the city.

Take some time and go to Haarzuilens to visit the gardens of De Haar Castle.  This is a beautiful castle with grand gardens.  Some say it’s beauty is much like Cinderella’s Castle at Disney!

There is sooo much to see in Amsterdam.  From the Royal Palace to historic churches, Keukenhof Gardens (a 20-acre park), 40 or so museums, markets, flower auctions… I would suggest you research the area first before going to get an idea of what exactly it is that you definitely don’t want to miss out on.

Visiting Amsterdam is a great value right now due to the Euro to USD conversion.

Try a Tulip Time River Cruise in April (9 days from $1,899 cruise/only).

River cruising – Consider these ships “boutique style, on-water hotels”.  All rooms have windows, some with French-style balconies.  You get wine with onboard dinners, bikes to use in the cities, internet access.  There are only 100 or so passengers due to the small ‘boutique style’ ship.  A great idea for your group ~ it’s almost like a private charter if you have a large group!
