Only 90 miles from Oahu is a Hawaiian island that many have likened to a true paradise - Kauai, the state's oldest isle and most lush island, has long waterfalls and valleys deeply embedded in its mountainsides.

The island boasts terrain as varied as anywhere in Hawaii. The Waimea Canyon is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific and archaeological sites abound at Wailua River State Park.

According to Frommer's, visitors who stop here during their Hawaii vacation will find 50 miles of beaches that range from the quiet surf at Hanalei Beach to big waves on the island's North Shore.

Travelers can find collectibles at Poipu Shopping Village and upscale shopping at the Kong Lung Store. The Kauai Heritage Center of Hawaiian Culture & the Arts is known for the most authentic Hawaiian arts and crafts.

Most nightly entertainment takes place at the island's resort hotels. Some towns, including Wailua, Waipouli and Kapaa, have sunset torch-lighting ceremonies with music and dancing.

Dining is fairly sophisticated with a wide selection of both Asian and western cuisines. A local favorite is the Tip Top Café and Bakery, which has been open in Lihue since 1916. But the best dessert island-wide is "shave ice," a flavored ice cone found at local foodstands.
