Alaska
Published Wednesday, June 4th 2008WOW! I need a vacation! But how can I plan a vacation when my husband travels all the time for work and I’m sure he won’t want to go anywhere?! Well, I asked him just that question and he told me we need to take a cruise. For him, a cruise is relaxing and NOTHING like staying in hotels. Even though he travels for 10+ days at a time with barely any time at home, he is really coming down on me to plan our next cruise! I find that so hard to believe! I was so scared to even ask him about a vacation and now it seems it’s all he can talk about. How funny is that? Anyway, I guess the point I’m trying to make here is that everyone needs a vacation. Even (or maybe especially) people whose work has them traveling all the time.
So, where to go? We have been to the Caribbean so many times. I really want to go to Alaska! The season for going to Alaska is May through September with best rates being in May and September. Here are some interesting facts you may not know about Alaska:
- Alaska is 570,373 square miles
- It is FOUR times larger than California
- TWO times larger than Texas
- TWELVE times larger than New York
- 19 of the 20 tallest mountains are in Alaska
- Alaska has the highest concentration of Bears & Bald Eagles in the world and has a higher population of caribou than people!
- ½ of all US National Parks land is in Alaska
- Alaska’s coastline is longer than the entire coastline of the contiguous US
So, when I go to Alaska, I will want to have plenty of time to do it right. I want to go on a “CruiseTour” which will give me days in Alaska’s interior exploring Denali National Park. Imagine, visiting old mining or lumber towns and Cruising past glaciers for 7 days and then taking a train [with domed ceilings for maximum viewing of the wildlife and the mountains – guides providing commentary – local Alaskan Cuisine served along the way] to Denali. This is where North America’s tallest peak is – Mt. McKinley. Denali is also a 6 million acre wilderness preserve!
Cruise lines that go to Alaska offer these CruiseTours. I want to take one like Princess offers which will take me to their Copper River Wilderness Lodge. This lodge overlooks America’s larges National Park, Wrangell-St. Elias with views of Mts. Drum, Wrangell and Blackburn. Why, you may ask? Well, it’s personal for me. When I was growing up, my family traveled – A LOT – and we used to listen to John Denver tapes in our RV. He has this one song about seeing the Wrangell Mountains. It’s just something that brings back fond memories. So when you are looking for your perfect vacation, tell me something about yourself. Let me find something that will be just as special for you.
